Biographical Note

Ave Dale Johnson worked with husband Charles as a missionary-teacher in the Belgian Congo in the 50’s, taught on the Navajo Reservation in the 60’s, and was one of St. Paul Schools’ first ESL teachers in the 70’s. The couple befriended the local Hmong community and founded the Hmong Book Project, translating Hmong folk tales into English for ESL use.

The Hmong folk tale collection contains books and zine sized stories collected and published by Charles Johnson and his wife Ava with the enormous support of the Hmong community in the early 1980s and 1990s. These stories were compiled to help preserve the oral tradition, language, and mythology of the Hmong people.
