Historical Note
The Queer Union dedicates itself to the creation of safe spaces for queers and friends through a commitment to education, community building, personal support, and social change both on campus and in the broader community. QU welcomes all students, irrespective of identity.
The Queer Union has a long history at Macalester going back to 1975. Originally started as the Gay Student Collective (GSC) in 1975, the organization switched names several times to better represent its members as terminology changed and awareness was raised over the decades. From the GSC to the Macalester Lesbian and Gay Coalition (MLGC) just a few years later, to Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals United (GLBU) in 1986, to the Queer Union in 1993.
Please see Hillary Moses Mahaupt's, "Points of Struggle, Points of Pride", for a brief but descriptive history of LGBTQAI+ students and activities at Macalester
