Biographical / Historical
David Hopper was born July 31th, 1927 in Maplewood, New Jersey and he died April 28th, 2020. His early childhood education was completed in the public school system of South Orange/Maplewood, New Jersey. Hopper served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and was stationed on the USS Franks (DD-554). After his discharge, Hopper attended Yale University and received his BA in 1950. In 1959 Hopper graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary with his Master of Theology/Ph.D. There he studied for a year in Bonn, Germany (Friedrich Wilhelms Üniversität). He soon after moved to St. Paul Minnesota to work as a professor in the Religion Department at Macalester College. He continued to work at Macalester for 38 years with some of his favorite courses being Modern Christian Thought; Existentialism; Science and Religion; The Thought of the Reformation; and seminars on Kierkegaard, Niebuhr, Tillich and Bonhoeffer. After his retirement from Macalester in 2000, he taught in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, hosted by the University of Minnesota. His recent Osher courses included The Theological Struggle against the Nazis and The Speeches of Abraham Lincoln. David Hopper authored four books including Tillich: A Theological Portrait; A Dissent On Bonhoeffer; Technology, Theology, and the Idea of Progress; and Divine Transcendence and the Culture of Change.
