Scope and Contents
The Roger Blakely Papers consist primarily of literary manuscripts, drafts, and related materials documenting Blakely's writing. The collection includes published novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as multiple manuscript drafts, correspondence, photographs, ephemera, and archival documentation.

Biographical / Historical
Roger Kellogg Blakely was born on May 13, 1922, in Barnum, Minnesota. He graduated from Barnum High School and attended Macalester College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1943. Following military service as an Air Corps cryptographer in India and the Pacific during World War II, Blakely completed a Master of Arts degree at the University of Minnesota.
Blakely joined the Macalester College faculty in 1946, teaching in the English Department and the Humanities Program while also holding a joint appointment in the Art Department. During his career, he received the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1973 and the Burlington Northern Award in 1989. Upon his retirement, Macalester honored him with the Distinguished Citizen Citation in 1992.
Blakely was the author of North from Duluth (1981) and The Importance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1993). He also co-edited Border Crossings (1984) and Stiller's Pond: An Anthology of Fiction from the Upper Midwest (1988).
