Biographical / Historical
John Huntley Dupre was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1892. He attended Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1914, a Bachelor of Law in 1916, and a Ph.D. in 1932. He subsequently taught history at the University of Kentucky.
In 1946, Dupre joined Macalester College as temporary director of student personnel and professor of modern civilization. In 1951, he was appointed Dean of the College. Throughout his career, Dupre worked extensively with students in both national and international settings. He served as executive secretary of the World University Service, director of the International Student Union in Czechoslovakia, led the Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN) in 1950, and directed the Sherwood Eddy Seminars from 1951 to 1956, which brought together college presidents, ministers, and international leaders.
Dupre was a prolific scholar whose publications focused primarily on the French Revolution. He authored biographies of Lazare Carnot, Hugh Swinton Legaré, and Constantine Samuel Rafinesque, as well as a biography of Edward Duffield Neill, the founder of Macalester College.
