Schwartz (A. Truman) papers

Truman A. Schwartz is a chemist and former faculty member at Macalester College. He attended the University of South Dakota from 1952 to 1956. During his senior year, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and subsequently attended Oxford University from 1956 to 1958. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of South Dakota. Following his graduation from MIT, Schwartz worked as a research chemist for Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Schwartz joined the Macalester faculty in 1966. He served as dean of the faculty and as chair of the Department of Chemistry for two terms, from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1995. He retired from Macalester in 2004 and subsequently became a member of the Dean's Council of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Dakota. Throughout his career, Schwartz served as a visiting researcher at the University of Lund in Sweden and the University of Massachusetts, and as a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin, the University of South Dakota, and the University of York.

Schwartz co-authored several works, including Chemistry: Imagination and Implication, Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society, And Gladly Teach: A Resource Book for Chemists Considering Academic Careers, and Motion Toward Perfection: The Achievement of Joseph Priestley. He was a fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society.

Schwartz received the George C. Pimentel Award in Chemical Education and a Catalyst Award in Chemical Education from the Chemical Manufacturers Association. He was also named College Science Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Science Teachers Association.
