Biographical Note
Charles J. Turck who served as President of Macalester College from 1939 to 1958, modernized and expanded the campus, doubling enrollment over his term while substantially increasing the college's endowment. He focused his efforts on strengthening traditions of internationalism and service to the community worldwide through amongst other efforts, helping to launch the study abroad program, the International Relations major, as well as the visiting speaker programs. He was responsible for the flying of the United Nations flag beginning in 1950, a tradition which continues to this day. He was a proponent of free speech while working to actively diversify the faculty. Turck wrote Mac Weekly columns on issues such as racial and economic justice and world peace and the eponymous residence hall is named for him.
